[義務]:must / should
  • What are we to do?
  • All staff are to wear uniforms.
  • Rooms are to be left before 11 AM.

[予定]:will
  • Audrey and Jimmy are to be married in June.
  • Mr Jones was to speak at the meeting.
  • The Prime Minister is to arrive today in Tokyo.

[可能]:can
  • How is this work to be finished in time?
  • Mt. Fuji is to be seen at that point.
  • The answer is nowhere to be found.

[意図]:(if節の中で使われて)will
  • If you are really to succeed in anything, you must make a good start.
  • If you are to work here for more than three months, you must have a residence permit.

[運命]:予定と一緒と考えても特に問題はない。過去の否定文でneverと共に使われる。
  • She was never to realize her dream.
  • He was never to see his homeland again.
