can（能力・可能性）の過去形はcould。
can（推量）の場合はcan't + have + 過去分詞。
- I can make jewelry.（能力：～できる）
- I could swim when I was young.（能力：～できた）
- He can't have been there yesterday.（推量：～したはずだ）
［mayの過去形］
may（推量）の過去形はmay + have + 過去分詞。
時制の一致や仮定法などで過去時制にする場合はmightを用いる。
- She may agree with this plan.（推量：～かもしない）
- Something may have happened to him.（推量：～したかもしれない）
- She said she might move to Australia.（推量：～かもしれない）
［mightの過去形］
mayよりも可能性が低い時に使われる。そのため日本語に訳す時に「ひょっとしたら」をつけることが好まれることもある。つまりmightそれ自体は現在形で使われる。
might（推量）の過去形はmight + have + 過去分詞。
- It might be right.（推量：～かもしれない）
- He might have finished it.（推量：～したかもしれない）
［willの過去形］
will（単純未来）を過去にする場合は単純に動詞の過去形。
will（推測や意思など）を過去にする場合はwould。
※will + have + 過去分詞は「未来完了」となって別の意味を持つ。
時制の一致や仮定法などで過去時制にする場合はwouldを用いる。
- She will be twenty-four next month.（単純未来：～だろう）
- We'll be late.（推測：～だろう）
- I thought we would be late, so we would have to take the train.（推測：～だろう）
［shallの過去形］
時制の一致や仮定法などで過去時制にする場合はshouldを用いる。
- He thinks that they shall go the restaurant.（推測）
- He thought that they should go the restaurant.（推測）
［mustの過去形］
must（義務）の過去形はhad to。
msut（推量）の過去形はmust + have + 過去分詞。
- I must complete the project by this week.（義務：～しなければならない）
- The building must have fired last week.（推量：～に違いない）
